Integrative & Functional Medicine for High Cholesterol
The Integrative and Functional Medicine approach addresses the underlying causes of high cholesterol and how they can be treated. The causes we look at for high cholesterol is quite different from the conventional approach. We know that, for most of the people, the fat or unhealthy diet we eat has little impact on the cholesterol in circulation in the body.
The liver is responsible for making most of the cholesterol in circulation. The majority of this cholesterol doesn’t originate only from the food we eat.
However, for about 25% of the population respond highly for dietary cholesterol. So in our approach, we review the possible causes of high cholesterol. If we still aren’t seeing improvement after addressing possible causes, we then move to more of a lower fat diet which emphasizes mono-unsaturated fats than saturated fats.
The most common causes of high cholesterol that we review:
- Metabolic dysfunction which includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels
- A hidden source of inflammation in the body, could be obesity, the gut health or a concealed viral infection
- Low thyroid function
The three main contributors that support improvements in metabolic health are diet, movement and sleep. Addressing these will reduce inflammation in the body and help achieve a healthy body weight and body composition.
Based on the root cause analysis, specific type of fibers/husk that lowers cholesterol and escorts bile out of the gut, rather than the bile being re-absorbed, is focused on in the treatment program along with elimination of other toxins and hormonal imbalance that are contributing to the accumulation of bad lipid in the body. Series of Ayurveda treatments also helps in better blood circulation and lymphatic drinage (to remove un necssary accumulation of harmful elements). The team of doctors will systematically plan your program to reduce high colecterol without using medicines.
